Park and Reserve Gate Times
The gate into Lion Sands Kruger Park opens at 05h00 and closes at 18h00.
The gate into Lion Sands Sabi Sand opens at 05h00 and closes at 22h00.
Please let us know if you will be arriving outside of these hours so that we can make the necessary arrangements for your entrance.
Lodge Check-In and Checkout Times
Check-in is at 14h00 and checkout is at 11h00, daily. Should you require a later checkout, please contact the Guest Relations team at your lodge and they will do their best to accommodate you.
Malaria is a potentially life-threatening disease carried by the Anopheles mosquito. Lion Sands Game Reserve is located in a low-risk malaria area, but we urge you to consult your doctor about malarial prophylactics before visiting.
The average maximum temperatures range from 24°C/75°F in July to 33°C/90°F in January, with the lowest average minimum occurring in July at 8°C/46°F. The average annual rainfall is 350mm (14in), most of which occurs during midsummer (December – February). Rain is usually in the form of thundershowers, where a downpour is experienced, very seldom lasting longer than a few hours.
What to Pack for Safari
For game drives and bush walks, we suggest wearing neutral-coloured, natural-fibre clothing. Anything item in dark or bright colours, which absorb heat and attract bugs, is best left at home. Around the lodge, casual and comfortable is the order of the day, and there’s no cause to dress up at night, unless you’d like to.
- Sturdy walking shoes, as well as sandals/flip flops to wear back at the lodge
- Scarf, gloves, pullover, and windbreaker (evenings and winter can get chilly)
- Swimwear, if desired
- Sun hat, sunglasses, and high-SPF sunscreen and lip balm (even in winter)
- Insect repellent (also provided by the lodges)
- Camera, video camera, spare memory cards, and charging equipment
- Binoculars, if desired
- Book or e-reader
- Waterproof bag for personal items

You can’t come on safari and not get a bit dusty, so we offer laundry facilities at each lodge. It must be remembered that as these are ‘bush laundries’, it’s not advisable to send delicate items that require special care.
Laundry bags/baskets are provided in each room, along with a laundry list. We ask that you leave your completed list and filled bag on the bed prior to the early-morning game drive – this will enable us to return your items by the afternoon.
This service incurs an additional cost (except for guests of Ivory Lodge), which will be added to your final account, payable on checkout, for your convenience.
Kosher Offering at Ivory Lodge and River Lodge
For our Jewish guests, we offer kosher cuisine, freshly prepared on-site in a dedicated kitchen. To ensure kosher principles are observed and you enjoy a worry-free stay, we establish your specific needs prior to arrival. For this reason, bookings for kosher stays must be confirmed at least 30 days prior to arrival and the level of kosher requirement stipulated at time of booking.
Tipping is at your discretion. Should you choose to leave a gratuity for the lodge staff, you can have this added to your final account. As a guideline, we suggest between ZAR600 and ZAR900 per room/suite/villa per day – this will be shared* between your field guide team and hospitality staff.
