TRAVELLING TO LION SANDS GAME RESERVE

There are a number of convenient options when it comes to Travelling to Lion Sands Game Reserve.

  • Daily scheduled flights between Cape Town, Johannesburg and Skukuza Airport operated by Airlink. Definitely the quickest and most efficient solution!
  • An easy 5 hour drive from Johanneburg. Road transfers are also available. This is a good option should you wish to take in the scenery of the breathtaking Mpumlanga region.
  • The scheduled Safari Link charter connects the Sabi Sand Reserve with Madikwe Game Reserve, Welgevonden and Marataba Game Reserve. This is perfect for those who wish to explore the different MORE Hotels & Lodges within the same itinerary.

Recommended Route to Lion Sands Sabi Sand (6 hours)

  • Take the N12/N4 highway from the Gauteng region towards Emalahleni (formerly known as Witbank)/ Middelburg and further on to Mbombela (formerly known as Nelspruit)
  • On arrival into Mbombela, follow the R40 from Mbombela through to White River and on to Hazyview
  • At the T-junction between Kiepersol and Hazyview, turn left onto the R538 which will take you into the town of Hazyview
  • At the 2nd traffic lights with a shopping centre on the right, turn right onto the R536 towards Paul Kruger Gate (Kruger National Park)
  • After 38km turn left onto a gravel road which has signposts to Lion Sands Sabi Sand
  • Drive along the gravel road for approximately 4km. At the T-junction turn right and drive for a further 4km to Shaw’s Gate, the entrance to the Sabi Sand Wildtuin. Note: There is an Entrance Fee payable so please check with Reservations as to what the current fee is as it is subject to change. They do take credit cards so don’t worry about travelling with cash
  • Please remember, the animals have right of way and the speed limit in the reserve is 30km/h. Should you encounter some of our residents on the road, enjoy the sight and allow them to pass before continuing along your route
  • Follow the signposted route to Lion Sands Sabi Sand, after approximately 2km turn right at the Lion Sands Sabi Sand sign
  • Follow the route to either River Lodge or Ivory Lodge. You will encounter a control gate closer to the lodge. Please sign in and enjoy the very unique welcome •

Please contact us on +27 13 735 5000 when you arrive in Hazyview so we know that you are close by. It would be even better if you could phone us when you leave so we know what time to expect you. This will allow us to keep track and make sure you arrive safely.

 

PLEASE NOTE:

  • It is safe to drive so don’t worry about driving through the rural areas, as the locals’ sense of community and the importance of your security is very highly regarded
  • Please advise us of your estimated time of arrival and note in winter (May to September) game drives leave at 15h30 and summer at 16h30, so try make it to us before then. If you do arrive later than these times we will be able to organise a link up, so don’t worry if you are running late
  • There are always a number of speed traps with traffic police along the way, so please be sure to observe the speed restrictions
  • The gate to the Sabi Sand Wildtuin opens at 05h00 and closes at 22h00. Please advise the Lodge if you will be arriving outside of these times so that the necessary arrangements can be made

Skukuza Airport to Lion Sands River and Ivory Lodge

  • From Skukuza Airport drive towards Skukuza town (you can only go right as there is a gate with a guard to the left) until you reach a T-junction after about 2km.
  • At T-junction with Tshokwane- Skukuza road (H1-2) turn right towards the Sabie River (about 800m).
  • After crossing the Sabie River low-level bridge there is a 4-way stop. Turn left at the stop onto the Skukuza-Lower Sabie Road (Ellof or H4).
  • After 900m, turn right onto Paul Kruger Gate road (H11) and follow for 2.5km until you reach a big 4-way stop.
  • Continue over the big 4-way stop towards Kruger Gate – approximately 12km from the stop (Ensure that you have an exit permit to leave Kruger Gate).
  • From Kruger Gate continue on the Hazyview road (about 4.5km) until you see the signs for Lion Sands Sabi Sand turning right onto a dirt road.
  • Drive along the gravel road for approximately 4km. At the T-junction turn right and drive for a further 4km to Shaw’s Gate, the entrance to the Sabi Sand Wildtuin. Recommended Route to Lion Sands Kruger National Park (6 hours)

Continue on this road for 2km and turn left at the first junction, the signpost will read “Narina 2km“, continue on the gravel road until you reach Narina Lodge reception
  • Directions to TINGA: Continue on the road to Skukuza Restcamp. At the first four-way stop, Skukuza Restcamp will be on your left and it will be signposted to go straight to TINGA 7 km. Carry on straight until you reach a T–junction where it is signposted Tinga 4km. At the T–junction, turn left and then at the next four-way stop turn right, towards the river and go over the low level bridge. About a 1/2 km after the bridge you turn left onto a gravel road. Once on the gravel road drive straight until you see the sign post for TINGA reception.

Gate entrance fees into Kruger National Park for 2016 are as follows:

  • These fees are payable in cash or by credit card upon arrival at the gate. Mastercard and Visa credit cards are accepted PLEASE NOTE:

Lion Sands Tinga Lodge

  • From Skukuza Airport drive towards Skukuza town (you can only go right as there is a gate with a guard to the left) until you see the sign for Tinga Lodge and turn right (about 100m from the airport). Drive straight until you see the sign post for TINGA reception. Welcome to Lion Sands Kruger National Park, where a great few days on safari awaits. It’s time to relax – we will take care of everything from here on out.

Lion Sands Narina Lodge

  • From Skukuza Airport drive towards Skukuza town (you can only go right as there is a gate with a guard to the left) until you reach a T-junction after about 2km.

Recommended Route from Hoedspruit to Lion Sands Sabi Sand (2.5 hours)

  • Continue to Klaserie Road (R40) for 3.5km.
  • Follow the R40 for 82.6km towards Marite A.
  • Take the R536 for 49.1km to Lion Sands. Continue from Hazyview until you see the signs for Lion Sands Sabi Sand turning right onto a dirt road.
  • Drive along the gravel road for approximately 4km. At the T-junction turn right and drive for a further 4km to Shaw’s Gate, the entrance to the Sabi Sand Wildtuin.
