
RECOMMENDED ROUTE TO LION SANDS SABI SAND (6 HRS)
- Take the N12/N4 highway from the Gauteng region
towards Emalahleni (formerly known as Witbank)/
Middelburg and further on to Mbombela (formerly
known as Nelspruit)
- Upon arrival into Mbombela, follow the R40 from
Mbombela through to White River and on to Hazyview
- At the T-junction between Kiepersol and Hazyview,
turn left onto the R538 which will take you into the
town of Hazyview
- At the 2nd traffic lights with a shopping centre on the
right, turn right onto the R536 towards Paul Kruger Gate
(Kruger National Park)
- After 38km turn left onto a gravel road which has
signposts to Lion Sands
- Drive along the gravel road for approximately 4km.
At the T-junction turn right and drive for a further 4km
to Shaw’s Gate, the entrance to the Sabi Sand Wildtuin.
Note: There is an Entrance Fee payable so please check
with Reservations as to what the current fee is as it is
subject to change. They do take credit cards so don’t
worry about travelling with cash
- Please remember, the animals have right of way and
the speed limit in the reserve is 30km/h. Should you
encounter some of our residents on the road, enjoy the
sight and allow them to pass before continuing along
your route
- Follow the signposted route to Lion Sands, after
approximately 2km turn right at the Lion Sands sign
- Follow the route to either River Lodge or Ivory Lodge.
You will encounter a control gate closer to the lodge.

Please contact us on +27 13 735 5000 when you arrive in
Hazyview so we know that you are close by. It would be
even better if you could phone us when you leave so we
know what time to expect you. This will allow us to keep
track and make sure you arrive safely.
Gate entrance fees into the Sabi Sands are as follows
for 2012:
- Vehicle fee – R160; Per person fee – R40
- These fees need to be paid in cash at the gate
Please Note:
- It is safe to drive so don’t worry about driving through
the rural areas, as the locals’ sense of community and
the importance of your security is very highly regarded
- Please advise us of your estimated time of arrival and
note in Winter (May to September) game drives leave
at 15h30 and Summer at 16h30, so try make it to us
before then. If you do arrive later than these times we
will be able to organise a link up, so don’t worry if you
are running late
- There are always a number of speed traps with traffic
police along the way, so please be sure to follow the
speed restrictions
- The gate to the Sabi Sand Wildtuin opens
at 05h00 and closes at 23h00. Please advise the
Lodge if you will be arriving outside of these times so
that the relevant arrangements can be made
