Six Lion cubs born on Lion Sands reserve

Two lionesses from the Hilda’s Rock Pride have been a regular sighting on the property over the last couple of weeks. On most occasions we find them along the Sabie River in the southern section of the Reserve. The reason for this is because we believed that the two females have been hiding cubs in the tall reeds along the rivers edge.

Finally, our wait was over. On a chilly morning game drive this past week, we located the two females on River Road in the south eastern section of the property. They were lying in the sun, attempting to escape the chilly wind which had started to blow. Suddenly to the delight of everyone involved, three cubs appeared from the brush, then another and finally another two, but disappeared as quickly as they appeared. What an incredible sighting. Unfortunately we did not view them for long, as they disappeared back into the safety of the reeds.

We managed to view six cubs, but we expect that there were a few more nestled in the surrounding vegetation as both lactating females were present. We hope to get more exciting sightings of the growing cubs and will definitely share photographs with you once we have longer sightings of them.
