Impala males on the rut …
There was a hype of activity around Lion Sands during the last couple of weeks as we entered the Impala rutting season. The impala rut takes place in April; where males battle it out to determine who is the strongest and fittest and who have the right to mate with passing herds of females.
Our guests have been treated to an incredible show of agility, aggression and intense battles between Impala rams for the rights to mate with the passing herds of females. These epic battles can last for 30 minutes or more depending on the strength of the male involved.
This was the case earlier this week when two equally matched males clashed. The fight went on for 35 minutes and both males were absolutely exhausted and breathing heavily - but not one would surrender! With clashing horns and flying dust, the two battled it out until the fight finally took its toll on the slightly weaker male. He turned away and ran off into the distance with the new territory holder in hot pursuit …
